How to replace the drum cartridge

      Time to Replace the Drum Cartridge:
      You can check the time to replace the drum cartridge in the Printer Status Window. For details on the time to replace the drum cartridge, see "Time to Replace the Drum Cartridge" in Related Information at the end of this page.
      How to Replace the Drum Cartridge:
      IMPORTANT
      a. When you are replacing the drum cartridge, be sure to use the drum cartridge designed for this printer. When you purchase a replacement drum cartridge, contact your local authorized Canon dealer.
      b. The inner portion of the printer needs to be cleaned when replacing the drum cartridge, therefore, have a soft, dry cloth available.

      1. Open the top cover.
      Holding the opening of the top cover, open it until it stops.
      2. Remove the drum cartridge from the printer.
      Push the drum cartridge in the direction of the arrow (1) until it stops, then lift it straight up to remove it (2).
      3. Using a soft, dry cloth, wipe off chipped paper and toner that are attached to the transparent sheet located in front of the roller.
      IMPORTANT
      a. Be careful not to scratch the transparent sheet or peel it by force.
      b. Do not use a cloth dampened with water or a mild detergent diluted with water.
      c. Be careful not to touch unnecessary parts in the printer when cleaning.

      4. Take the drum cartridge out of the protective bag.
      Use scissors to open the protective bag so as not to damage the drum cartridge.
      IMPORTANT
      a. Keep the protective bag for the drum cartridge. It may be required after taking out the drum cartridge for printer maintenance.
      b. Print quality may deteriorate if you touch or damage the drum inside the drum cartridge. Be sure not to touch or open the drum protective shutter (A). Be careful not to hold or touch sensitive areas such as the sensor (B) that are not specified in this procedure. This may result in damage to the cartridge.
      c. Do not expose the drum cartridge to direct sunlight or strong light.

      5. Remove the packing materials (7 pieces).
      Remove the packing materials (A) and (B) by hooking your fingers into the tabs and pulling them in the direction of the arrows.
      Remove the packing materials (C) and (D) by turning them in the direction of the arrows until they stop and pulling them out.
      Remove the packing materials (E) and (F) by holding the tabs and pulling them in the direction of the arrows.
      Remove the packing material (G) by holding the tab as shown in the figure.
      IMPORTANT
      a. Do not hold or touch the electrical contacts (A). This may result in damage to the cartridge.
      b. Do not hold or touch the transfer belt (A), as this may degrade the printing quality. Do not jolt the drum cartridge memory (B) or bring it near a magnetic field, as this may result in damage to the cartridge.
      c. After removing the packing materials, install the drum cartridge in the printer as soon as possible.
      d. Dispose of the packing materials according to local regulations.

      6. Hold the drum cartridge with both hands and install it into the printer.
      Align "Triangular Mark" on the drum cartridge with "Triangular Mark" on the printer when you insert the drum cartridge (1).
      Lock the drum cartridge by pulling it down toward you (2).
      IMPORTANT
      Firmly lock the drum cartridge until it is in the state shown in the figure.

      7. Close the top cover.
      Holding the opening of the top cover, close it gently.
