Beyond the Cape is an immersive workshop happening this October 7, 2023 at Ciudad Del Rey in Las Pinas dedicated for the photographer who put on the hat of both fan and creator. Jay Tablante, a cosplay and commercial photographer veteran for over 20 years shares his insight and experiences on how you can realize your fanboy/girl fantasy from inspiration to end product jumping straight from the pages of your favorite comic book or anime. This session features tried and tested creativity techniques as well as lighting formations best used for cosplay.
There would also be guest speakers sharing other production aspects of the image-creation process (make-up / constuming / production design) to help participants get a well-rounded understanding of the concept-building. Also, get the chance to shoot one of the sought-after Cosplayers in the country today, none other than Charess!
The morning session is an interactive lecture covering creative self-awareness and processes in coming up with shoot concepts. This is wrapped up with participants building their concept decks on the fly.
The afternoon kicked-off with a live shoot and hand-on mentoring on how to come up with your Cosplay photos.

JAY TABLANTE – The Geek Behind the Lens
Jay Tablante has shot for the biggest names and brands in advertising, entertainment, and fashion, but his true passion can be seen in something near and dear to his geek heart: cosplay. Since 2003, Jay has spearheaded the elevation of cosplay photography as an art, approaching each shoot with the same professionalism that he would any commercial project. Collaborating with the industry’s top graphics artists, set designers, and prop makers, Jay has had the privilege of shooting the world’s most popular cosplayers (and local A-list celebs!) to bring his images to life.Two decades on, Jay hasn’t stopped shooting, to the point of releasing two published collections of cosplay photography since 2012. In addition to being featured in various cosplay photography books around the world, Jay can regularly be found discussing his craft at local, regional, and international pop culture conventions. Twice, he’s even brought his expertise to the hallowed halls of San Diego Comic Con, where he and his work were highlighted as a featured panelist.Today, Jay continues to be one of the Philippines’ most prominent photographers. Recognized as a Canon Brand Ambassador for 10 years, his work can be found in a variety of prominent publications and campaigns, such as the one promoting GMA’s blockbuster Voltes V Legacy, and any number of products. Great photos are best taken using a high quality camera model such as Canon cameras. Since this workshop will be mostly hands-on, it is important that you bring your camera (regardless what brand it is). Another option is to avail the Access to Lens/Camera Loan Program of Canon which is included in your workshop package. You can borrow Canon lens or camera that you can use during the workshop, just let us know ahead of time. Terms and conditions apply. All participants would have to deposit to Canon’s BDO account 2 days after the registration or 1 week before the event whichever is earlier. Only paid registrants will be confirmed to attend the workshop.
